JCDC NAMES THREE MORE PARISH QUEENS

Another three cultural ambassadors were named over the weekend as the parishes of St. Mary, Manchester and Kingston & St. Andrew crowned their respective parish festival queens in the Miss Jamaica Festival Queen 2012 Competition.

On Saturday (May 5), 20-year old Sasheena Douglas, a past student of St. Mary High School walked away with the St. Mary Festival Queen title. She was awarded the ' Most Culturally Aware' contestant and received the trophy for the most outstanding performer. 22-year old Zonika Tracey was named 1st runner up, while 25-year old Tavia Richards received the 2nd runner up spot and was also voted the `Most Congenial’ contestant. The ‘Best Performer’ trophy for the evening was awarded to Patrice Mills who entertained the crowd with her speech item entitled ‘Heroic Tales’.

In Manchester, 24-year old Administrative Assistant Victoria Cole took the winning title and was also crowned the ‘Best Performer’ and ‘Most Poised’ contestant. But it was Television Hostess and first runner up, Odile Blake (19-years old), who walked away with three sectional prizes including the most coveted - ‘Most Culturally Aware’, ‘Most Congenial’ and ‘Best Community Involvement’. Chesand McCook was named 2nd runner while the ‘Most Improved’ and ‘Most Cooperative’ awards went to Sashoy Golding and Nikesha Miller respectively.

On Sunday (May 6), 25-year old Teacher, Rasheen Roper took the Kingston & St. Andrew title along with the ‘Most Poised’ award.The 1st runner up was 18-year old Chris-Ann Thomas while 2nd runner up Jameila Simpson walked away with the awards for ‘Most Culturally Aware’, ‘Most Congenial’ and shared the ‘Best Performance’ title with winner Rasheen Roper.

For 2012, contestants at the parish level are required to depict and highlight elements of the PATH (Programme of Advancement Through Health and Education) programme that is aimed at benefiting the most needy and vulnerable in society. PATH Ambassador trophies for the most outstanding performances were awarded to contestants Sasheena Douglas of St. Mary, Chesand McCook of Manchester and Chris-Ann Thomas of Kingston & St. Andrew.

The Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC) will select the final set of parish queens in Hanover and St. Elizabeth (May 12), Trelawny and Clarendon (May 13), St. Thomas and Westmoreland (May 19) and finally in St. Catherine and St. James (May 20). The selected Cultural Ambassadors will go on to compete at the grand coronation show scheduled for July 22 at the National Indoor Sports Centre in Kingston.
