JCDC Kicks Off Child Month with Inspiring Youth Performances at Day 2 of National Speech Finals

The Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC), an agency of the Ministry of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, ushered in Child Month in spectacular fashion with a vibrant display of youth talent on Day 2 of the National Speech Finals, held on May 1 at the Little Theatre in Kingston.

Children as young as three, each a gold medal winner from across the island, graced the stage in colourful, creative costumes Their performances spanned various categories, including Standard English Poems, Prose, Jamaican Poems, Dub Poetry, and Ensembles. From heartfelt solo renditions to dynamic group performances, the Little Theatre was alive with energy, rhythm, and authenticity.

Several performances featured original works written by the participants' own teachers. One standout was Mirror, a mixed Standard and Jamaican Prose piece performed by Arhiyanna Kentish of Ardenne High, written by her teacher, Jonathan McLaughlin.
“As a writer, it's always a privilege to see how a performer interprets your work,” McLaughlin shared. “Watching them bring emotion to the words, take them off the page, and breathe life into them on stage—it’s incredibly rewarding.”

He encouraged more educators to submit original material, emphasizing the importance of revision and collaboration. “The first draft of anything isn’t perfect. The JCDC process—getting feedback from adjudicators and creative veterans—helps refine the work, so the message is clear, and the audience truly connects."

McLaughlin added, “I’ve participated for three years, and this competition has made me a better writer.”
Kentish, who received a National Trophy for her performance, echoed the sentiment:
“It felt exciting and empowering to perform a poem written specifically for me by my teacher. I didn’t feel pressure—just pride.”

Top-performing schools included Christiana Leased Primary and Infant (Manchester), Jericho Primary (St. Catherine), Jessie Ripoll Primary (Kingston & St. Andrew), Kensington Primary (St. Catherine), and Kendal Primary & Infant Department (Manchester). Judges commended participants for their articulation, presence, and emotional resonance.

The event demonstrated that the JCDC Speech Competition is more than just a contest. It is a powerful platform for unearthing talent, fostering personal growth, building confidence, sharpening communication skills, and empowering young Jamaicans to harness the power of their voices.

The National Speech Finals conclude on Friday, May 2, at the Little Theatre. Upcoming events include Drum Fest on Monday, May 5, at the Ranny Williams Entertainment Centre, followed by more National Music Finals on May 6 and 8 at the Little Theatre.

All events are streamed live on the JCDC and PBCJ YouTube channels, the JCDC website, PBCJ TV, and JamVision. For full schedules and updates, visit www.jcdc.gov.jm and follow @jcdcjamaica on social media.
