As a little girl sitting quietly in church, Daina Craig dreamed of one day joining the praise and worship team. Week after week, she watched the worship leaders minister through song, quietly singing along from her seat and imagining the day she would use her own voice in the same way. At the time, however, she was too shy to put herself forward.
Today, that little girl has become one of the voices she once admired. At just 19 years old, Daina is a Top 6 finalist in the 2026 Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC) Gospel Star Competition, using the gift she was once too shy to share to encourage others and point them to God.
"I always had this gift, but I never really got the chance to sing," she recalled. "When I finally started putting myself out there, people began telling me that my voice connected with them. That's when I realised God had given me this gift for a reason."
Now pursuing a Bachelor of Music Education degree at the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts, Daina believes music has the unique ability to reach people in ways ordinary conversations often cannot.
"It carries truth when people are too tired to hear it," she said. "Sometimes a song becomes the prayer that someone doesn't have the words to pray. Worship reminds us that we're not alone."
Her passion for music continued to flourish from an early age. While in grade two, she began entering the JCDC Music Competitions, where she went on to earn multiple gold medals. Those early experiences not only developed her confidence as a performer but also reinforced her belief that excellence is an act of worship.
"I'm everything music," she said with a smile. "I want to become a music teacher because I believe excellence honours God."
Alongside her studies, Daina serves as a praise and worship leader and Sunday school teacher, two roles she treasures because they allow her to minister to others beyond the stage. Whether teaching children or leading worship, she sees every opportunity as another chance to reflect God's love.
Despite her growing confidence, Daina is candid about the challenges she continues to face as a young Christian.
"The journey has not been easy," she admitted. "I am still going through a rough patch. As a young person, it's hard sometimes, but talking to God more and praying about almost everything has brought me closer to Him."
That dependence on God is reflected in the scripture she holds closest to her heart, Philippians 4:13: "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me."
"It reminds me that even when I get tired, God is there to strengthen me," she said. "Nothing is impossible if I have faith."
For Daina, becoming a Gospel Star finalist is about far more than performing before a national audience. It is another opportunity to grow, to serve and to use the gift God has entrusted to her.
"I went from singing at church to sharing my gift with a bigger audience. This competition has helped me grow in confidence, improve my stage presence and step outside my comfort zone. It means a lot because I've come a long way."
More than anything, Daina hopes every performance draws someone closer to God.
"I believe worship can heal weary hearts and restore strength to people who feel weak. If my music points someone back to God's love, then I've fulfilled my purpose."
Years after quietly watching the worship team from the congregation, Daina Craig now ministers from one of Jamaica's biggest gospel stages. Her journey is a reminder that when a gift is nurtured, surrendered to God and used to serve others, even the quietest dreams can grow into a powerful ministry.
The 2026 Jamaica Gospel Star Competition airs live every Sunday in July at 8:00 p.m. on Television Jamaica (TVJ) and the Public Broadcasting Corporation of Jamaica (PBCJ). Viewers are encouraged to support their favourite contestants by voting each week, with voting numbers and other competition updates posted on the JCDC's social media pages. The competition will culminate on Sunday, August 2, during the Jamaica 64 Independence celebrations at Independence Village, where the Top Four contestants will compete for the Jamaica Gospel Star title. The evening will conclude with the annual Gospel Praise Concert featuring some of Jamaica's leading gospel ministers, before Jamaica's sixth Jamaica Gospel Star is crowned.
