Kingston, Jamaica – Jamaica's 2026 Emancipation and Independence celebrations have officially begun.

The season was launched on Sunday with the National Thanksgiving Service at the Olson Memorial Church of God under the theme "United in Celebrating Resilience," marking the start of a nationwide programme of commemorative, cultural and entertainment events leading up to Independence Day on August 6.

Delivering the keynote address, Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, the Honourable Olivia Grange, reminded Jamaicans that although the Emancipation and Independence season is known for its vibrant celebrations, it begins each year with thanksgiving in recognition of God's hand in Jamaica's journey and the faith that has sustained the nation through generations.

"We assemble not merely to commemorate milestones in our history, but to offer humble thanksgiving to the One whose grace has sustained our nation through every generation," she said.

Reflecting on Jamaica's journey from slavery to freedom and nationhood, the Minister noted that before there were celebrations in public squares, there were prayers in the nation's sanctuaries and, before there were declarations of freedom, there was unwavering faith that God would hear the cries of His people.

She said this year's theme, "United in Celebrating Resilience," recognises the enduring spirit that has enabled Jamaicans to overcome adversity while continuing to build a nation admired around the world for its creativity, courage and optimism.

"True resilience is not simply the ability to endure hardship; it is the steadfast confidence that God remains faithful in every season," she said, adding that Jamaicans have consistently demonstrated courage, determination and unity in overcoming challenges.

The National Thanksgiving Service also marks the transition from months of parish and national cultural activities—including the Jamaica Festival of the Arts, the Miss Jamaica Festival Queen Competition, the Jamaica Gospel Star Competition and the Jamaica Festival Song Competition—to the national Emancipation and Independence celebrations that culminate with the National Independence Civic Ceremony and the Grand Gala on August 6.

Echoing the Minister's message, Reverend Johnathan Hemmings of the Jamaica Council of Churches challenged Jamaicans to draw strength from the nation's legacy and embrace the future with confidence.

"There is no challenge that we are facing in this nation that the resilience of our people cannot overcome," he declared, encouraging citizens to honour the sacrifices of previous generations and continue working together, under God's guidance, to build a stronger Jamaica.

With the season now officially underway, Jamaicans can look forward to a vibrant calendar of events celebrating the country's history, culture, creativity and people. The programme continues with the Seville Emancipation Jubilee on July 31 before moving into six days of activities at Independence Village from August 1 to 6. Highlights include the Miss Jamaica Festival Queen Coronation, the Jamaica Gospel Star Grand Finale, Mello-Go-Roun', Independence Soul Tuesday, Independence Bingo, Dominoes and Games Night, culminating with the National Independence Civic Ceremony and the Grand Gala on August 6. Parish civic ceremonies and community celebrations will also take place across the island, giving Jamaicans the opportunity to commemorate the nation's 64th anniversary together.

Inviting Jamaicans at home and abroad to participate, Minister Grange said:

"These celebrations belong to all Jamaicans. Whether you are here at home or representing our nation overseas, I invite you to be part of this special season. Come out with your families and friends. Wear your black, green and gold with pride. Support our outstanding performers, artisans and creatives."
